How to set up Windows automatic updates

Setting automatic updates will ensure that students have the newest updates BEFORE logging in to the network.

(Note: Windows XP is the preferred software at Keene State College. If you have an earlier version of Windows or are using a different operating system please refer to the Help file or the company's Web site for instructions on scheduling automatic updates.)

  1. Left click on Start in the lower left hand corner of your screen
  2. Left click on Control Panel
  3. Look for Automatic Updates in the Window that comes up on your screen, double left-click on the Automatic Updates icon
  4. A new window will come up that should look like this:

    XP Updates
  1. Left click in the circle next to the green shield for Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them. Selecting any other option here means YOU are responsible for getting the updates manually, and it could slow down your network log in.
  2. We recommend scheduling daily updates for 5 p.m., but you can choose another time when you know your computer will be on and connected to the network.
  3. Left click on the Apply button in the lower right hand corner
  4. Left click on OK to close the window
  1. You have successfully scheduled your computer for automatic Windows operating system updates.

Once you have configured Windows automatic updates on your computer you can
