To connect to the KSC network you’ll need:
Hardware:
- An Ethernet card; the HelpDesk offers free network card
installation service on a first-come first-served basis.
- A data cable with an RJ45 connector. Computer Connections
in the Young Student Center sells these.
- A 40 Gigabyte (Gb) hard drive with enough space to install
McAfee and Cisco Clean Access Agent.
(For extra storage the ITG recommends Flash/USB drives,
which are available at Computer Connections.)
- 512 Megabytes (Mb) of random access memory (RAM).
- Recommended: A wireless network card
for laptops so students can use the public wireless networks
available on campus. (Students are not allowed to configure
a personal wireless network in their rooms as it creates
an insecure access point to the campus network. Please
read the CNUP for details.)
Software:
- Microsoft 2000, XP, or Mac OS X
- McAfee anti-virus software
is required computer software, and is included
on this CD. On campus students will
not be able to access the computer network available in
the residence halls without McAfee.
- Cisco Clean Access Agent software
is required computer software, and is
included on this CD.
- Students should bring any software installation CDs and
manuals to campus with them. Having the original software
on hand makes it easier to troubleshoot problems or rebuild
system components in the event of a computer crash.
- First year students should inquire about software needs
for their intended major with the discipline’s administration
- Recommended:
- Office Suite software; including
Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access (Students are eligible
for academic discounts on software through the KSC
bookstore).
- Spybot and Ad-Aware, which are included on this CD.
